Memorial Day is on the calendar. The Fourth of July is right behind it. You've got friends coming over, family driving in from out of town, and a grill that's been collecting dust since last fall. The food and drinks are the easy part. The yard? That takes a little more planning, especially if it's been on autopilot since winter.

Here's how to get your property looking sharp before guests start pulling into the driveway.

Start with the Mow

Nothing makes a yard look more put-together than a fresh mow. But "fresh" means more than just cutting it the morning of the party. Ideally, you want your lawn mowed two to three days before the event. This gives the grass time to recover from the cut, stand back up, and look full and even when people arrive. Mowing the morning of can leave clippings everywhere and visible wheel tracks from the mower.

If your grass has gotten tall, don't try to bring it down to size in one cut. Taking off more than a third of the blade stresses the turf and leaves it looking yellow and scalped. That's the opposite of what you want for a party. If it's way overgrown, do a first pass a week before to bring it down gradually, then a final clean-up mow a few days before the event.

Edge and Trim Everything

Edging is the detail work that separates a yard that looks maintained from one that looks professional. Run a string trimmer along sidewalks, the driveway, patio edges, and around landscape beds. Clean up around fence posts, mailboxes, and any trees or obstacles in the yard. This takes 15 to 20 minutes and makes a huge difference.

While you're at it, give the shrubs a once-over. If they've gotten shaggy or are growing into walkways, a quick trim cleans up the whole front of the house. Overgrown shrubs make even a freshly mowed lawn look neglected.

Handle the Beds

Landscape beds are one of the first things people notice walking up to a house. Pull any obvious weeds, especially the tall ones growing through the mulch. If your mulch has thinned out or faded since last spring, a fresh 2-inch layer of dyed hardwood makes the whole property look like it got a reset. We can usually get a mulch install done within a couple of days during the busy season, so even a last-minute call can work.

For homeowners in Fishers and Westfield with larger beds, pre-emergent bed treatments earlier in spring mean fewer weeds to deal with by party season. Something to consider for next year if the beds are a mess right now.

Mosquito Control: Don't Skip This

Nothing empties a backyard faster than mosquitoes. If your property backs up to woods, a pond, or any low-lying area that holds water, you'll want a mosquito treatment at least 24 to 48 hours before the party. Barrier sprays are applied to the perimeter of your yard and along shaded areas where mosquitoes rest during the day. One treatment typically keeps things manageable for three to four weeks.

Also walk your yard and dump any standing water. Old flower pot saucers, kids' toys, birdbaths, anything holding stagnant water is a mosquito nursery. Clear those out a few days before the party and you've already cut down the population significantly.

The Quick Checklist

One week out: First mow if the grass is overgrown. Schedule mosquito treatment. Order mulch if beds need refreshing.

Two to three days out: Final mow and edging. Trim shrubs. Pull weeds from beds. Blow off the patio, driveway, and walkways.

Day of: Pick up sticks, pet waste, and any debris. Set up tables and chairs on a clean, freshly cut lawn.
